Some words when perfectly put together have the power to move you deeply. Words have the power to make you think, reflect and become critical about the assumptions made in your life. This particular poem is a favourite to read in class. It reminds us that we are not our thoughts, and we are not our bodies – these things are simply a vessel for understanding our human experience. However, we have two journeys, one inward and one outward. Occasionally the two journeys don’t pair up, and we feel anxiety as the two paths fork. I find these words to be a powerful remind during those times. When the outward journey becomes disconnected from the inward journey it becomes a powerful practice to be still. It is in stillness we are able to go inward in order to discover our inner most needs and desires and with the ability to go inward, rather paradoxically, comes the ability to grow outward, thus linking the two journeys again. Complex? Just remember this – you are greater than the sum of your parts. You are in fact magic, and your magic is ahead by a century.
