The best description of Reiki I’ve ever heard comes from my Teacher Ashley O’Connell. She refers to reiki as “pure love” and when we give reiki we are giving pure love.
Reiki is a Japanese relaxation technique that can be preformed inches above the body or hands on the body. Our extraordinary hands act as a channel for energy, and when we place our hands near or on another body to preform reiki we are able to help move energy that is blocked or stagnant. This technique is also referred to sometimes as “light touch therapy” and there are some studies that suggest this type of care can be beneficial for pain or cancer patients.
Laying hands on or slightly above the body can help to trigger an energetic awareness around where and how we carry energy and emotions in our body and also helps activate the parasympathetic, healing portion of our nervous system. Reiki helps the recipient reach a meditative state and fosters a strong sense of self awareness which can move energetic blocks associated with the 7 Chakra or subtle energetic body. Reiki can help unlock suppressed feelings, sooth emotional distress, promote a peaceful and positive outlook while boosting self esteem. When our body finally lets go of postural conditions the practice of reiki is able to loosen blocked energy, stress as well as improve overall mood and well being.
I was taught reiki in the Usui tradition. Reiki was brought over to North America by Dr. Hayashi, a naval surgeon and student of Mikao Usui, and he used the practice to bring ease to his patients whose bodies were devastated by war. Dr Hayashi took on a Hawaiian student Hawayo Takata who is responsible for the introduction of the spiritual practice into the Western world. This lineage was brought to me through Ashley O’Connell who I have completed my Reiki Masters with.
It’s hard to talk about the definition and benefits of Reiki and truly express the magic of working with our energetic body. Louise Hay believes many of our dis-ease is rooted in thought patterns and emotional stagnant energy. I can honestly say that since working with reiki energy I believe this to be entirely true. Amazing things happen when we allow ourselves to exist wholley in our natural state. Feeling vulnerable is often part of finding ease. I’m able to ensure comfort and safety through my expertise as a movement & meditation educator by the use of crystals, essential oils, meditation and sound healing.
What To Expect –
WHAT DOES REIKI DO?
Reiki works on and balances all four levels of your being:
- Physical: your body and manifested symptoms of dis-ease
- Emotional: what you are feeling currently as well as stored and dormant emotions
- Mental: Calms and clears the mind to help distinguish limiting belief patterns so YOU can work towards healing old value systems
- Spiritual: your capacity to love yourself and others, as well as a higher power of your choosing
Reiki works holistically on the case rather than the effect of the disease:
- It treats the underlying discomfort instead of just the symptoms
- Reiki accelerates healing, which may cause some initial discomfort
HOW DOES A TREATMENT FEEL?
- You feel very relaxed as the energy flows through your body, some even fall asleep
- You may experience reiki energy as colours or as feelings of pure love
- You may experience either peacefulness; or perhaps notice old patterns or memories surface, try to let yourself feel them this is a safe space.
WHAT DO I DO DURING A TREATMENT?
1.Wear comfortable clothing
2. Take off your shoes, watch, belt and metal jewelry
3. Relax and enjoy the treatment eyes closed, but feel free to ask questions, this is an individual matter
4. Allow your mind to release thoughts and fears so you can focus on the present experience, you are safe and held
5. A treatment will focus on your areas of concern, Your practitioner may also need to work on other areas however such as chakra energy centres
6. Please inform your practitioner if there are any areas of your body you prefer not to be touched (professionalism and consent are key stones to a safe experience)
7. A pillow may be placed under your neck or knees, this helps take pressure off the back and spine. I also use bolsters and weighted props such as blankets.
8. A tissue may be placed over your eyes while you receive treatment, in addition to an eye pillow or crystal eye mask
9. Crystals, and crystal rollers may be used in your treatment
10. Soft, relaxing music may accompany the treatment unless you prefer silence. Sound healing is also used.
11. You can expect the treatment to start with a short meditation to help you settle into the space
12. You may experience a shift in consciousness, this is an important part of healing, you are safe and held.
AFTER THE TREATMENT
- Some feel energized, others feel incredible peace and relaxation. I have also felt light, content and/or sleepy after a treatment
- Drink several glasses of water after your treatment this will help flush out toxins and energy that may have shifted during the treatment
- For optimal results one can try three consecutive reiki sessions, however reiki is a smart energy and return visits are not required unless you feel called to continue treatment to help support your healing process
- To effect a resolution of your problem you may need to consider distance reiki healing (with continued telephone support), and making healthy lifestyle changes.
